The GT 330M kicked in for graphically intensive applications. In the previous generation of MacBook Pros, Apple used Intel’s integrated HD graphics only in the higher-end models, which also had a second, discrete GPU, the Nvidia GeForce GT 330M. The Sandy Bridge processors feature Intel’s HD Graphics 3000 integrated graphics processor. With the processor, cache, integrated graphics, and memory controller all residing on the same die, the Core i5 and Core i7 processors helped propel the new MacBook Pros well past their predecessors in CPU performance.

Intel’s latest Core series of processors, known by the code-name Sandy Bridge, are found inside every new MacBook Pro. The $2499 17-inch model has the same specs as the $2199 15-inch MacBook Pro. The $2199 15-inch model has a 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, a 5400-rpm 750GB hard drive, and a 1GB AMD Radeon HD 6750M discrete graphics processor. The $1799 15-inch model has a 2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, a 5400-rpm 500GB hard drive, and a 256MB AMD Radeon HD 6490M discrete graphics processor. The $1499 13-inch model has a 2.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor and a 5400-rpm 500GB hard drive. The $1199 13-inch model has a 2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor and a 5400-rpm 320GB hard drive.

The new MacBook Pro line consists of five models, all with 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory, and Intel’s integrated HD Graphics 3000 processor. It all translates into performance jumps that were worth the wait. That’s a longer-than-usual gap between updates, but the new MacBook Pros sport several changes under the hood, including new processors, new graphics processors, and a new peripheral connector. My question is, does this seem like a graphics card failure? If so, what do you think it would cost me? I think that the graphics card is directly attached to the logic board, which would mean a very expensive fix to replace it.It’s been nearly a year since Apple refreshed its MacBook Pro line.

They also informed me that although it was one of the affected models (Late 2011 15" MBP), it was not covered under the recall due to the fact that my serial number was not one of the affected machines. I chatted with Apple tech support and they said since it was out of warranty, they would charge me to chat online, at which point I politely declined. When researching the issue, I seem to have had a few symptoms that the 2011 MBPs have had with their graphics card failures (I can attach pictures of the lines on my screen if that will help diagnosing at all). I decided to restart if via the power button and the same problem happened. I left the computer on for about an hour and it did not move off the blank screen. The progress bar would get to ~30%-50% and then would go directly to a plain white/grey screen. The startup sound would go off, then the Apple logo would appear with the progress bar. I thought it was a typical random restart, but noticed something right away. Once my game started, the computer randomly restarted. Suspecting it was something with my graphics card, I booted up League of Legends and sure enough the issue came back. Once I quit safari, the problem went away instantly. Earlier tonight I was using Google Maps when my laptop became very warm and my screen started to flicker, a minute or two later the screen became distorted with random lines across the screen. I have a 15" 2011 MBP that died on me tonight and I'm trying to find the cause of the problem.
